For SCWSC Vice President...
S h i m r a B a r n e t t
HI Stern! I am Shimra Barnett. I absolutely love this school. I have a lot of school pride. Since arriving on campus I have made it my top priority to get involved in all of the incredible programs and clubs Stern has to offer. I have been fortunate to be a Student Ambassador and a Student Tour guide this year which allowed me to share my love of YU with prospective students. While there are many wonderful aspects of Stern College, there is still a lot of potential for growth. This year I was a co-president of Students Helping Students, a member in phone-a-thon, a crew member for Macslive ball tournament, and worked diligently at the Seforim Sale. I have been active with YUPAC and attended the national AIPAC conference. Next year I plan on continuing my tour guide position, but would love to dedicate myself to a student council position to to create the best possible upcoming year for you!! I am a very hard worker and extremely dedicated. In my hometown of Columbus, OH I was commonly called a “getter doner” and I have the intention to uphold this reputation in the coming school year!
SCW: Describe one goal you want to accomplish for the student body and tell us how you would accomplish that goal.
Stern is very special to me because it’s a place where Jews from all over the world can come together to learn. It’s a place where people can create friendships and develop programming regardless of their external appearance or religious affiliation. My goal for Stern is Unity. Acceptance should be an underling goal of all our activities and clubs. Each student should feel comfortable in this environment and have the opportunity to voice what they would like to enhance or change. Some of my plans include having bi-monthly Stern Speaks events. These forums will be not only a social activity but will be a place for each and every woman to voice their thoughts and suggestions student council town hall meeting.
Another very important piece of my campaign is to make Stern a place where students are financially able to attend. By making sure that SCWSC properly allocates its resources as well as initiates the proper fundraising, we can ensure that our programming will be much more effective. While I have already begun working on this program, though the backing of SCWSC, Students Helping Students, and various retailers, projects such as Coffee Bean selling Ice Blendeds at a reduced cost that could help provide student scholarships to Yeshiva University.
*Thanks to Eli Blanco for the beautiful flyer!
SCW: You have planned a huge event, but you wake up the morning of the event with a migraine. How do you ensure a quality event even though you cannot personally attend?
I would personally call on another person who is on student council or someone who has worked closely with me for the coordinating of the event and make sure to explain to them in minute detail everything that they may not know. I would keep in constant contact with that person throughout the program to ensure everything is running smoothly. Knowing myself, I would probably push myself out of bed for that hour and a half and put on a smile and help run the program.
SCW: One of your clubs has two club heads. You know that one is doing all of the work and "doesn't mind," but the club really needs both heads to be on their "A-game" in order to succeed. How do you proceed?
I would take the other club head aside and relay in the most polite way that the clubs potential could really be maximized if they stepped up to the plate. I would make sure that everything is ok and see if she needs to talk, or would like to step down because of too much pressure.
